Year-1 students who are admitted to a full-time 4-/5- year undergraduate programme may permit to take a Second Major. To facilitate planning, students are required to indicate their intended Second Major in their first year of study by submitting the application for taking Second Major on-line via The Portal between 1 - 31 March (both dates inclusive) of the respective year to obtain prior approval of the relevant party or department/unit.
For detailed application procedures, please check the university announcements on the Second Major via The Portal from January of the respective year or refer to this website https://curriculum.eduhk.hk/.
The key features of a Second Major are:
- Credit points for a Second Major are from 30 to 36 (10-12 courses under the Electives Domain)
- For programmes with less than 30cps in the Electives Domain, students need to take extra credit points to fulfil the Second Major’s requirements
- There is no guarantee that related arrangements (such as timetabling) will tally with students’ study plans
- There is no Teaching Practice or immersion/internship for a Second Major
- The final award is a single award of the First Major
- A Second Major will not lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
You are only allowed to double count up to a maximum of 9 credit points within a 5-year undergraduate degree programme and 6 credit points within a 4-year undergraduate degree programme (also applicable to SYE programmes). You are required to take other courses to meet the credit requirement of your programme.
You are permitted to take a Second Major, subject to your fulfilment of the programme-specific requirements and GPA requirement of normally 3.0 or above in the first year of study. For SYE, special approval is required.
No teaching practice will be provided to Second Major/Minor(s) courses.
